Colorado Avalanche vs. Pittsburgh Penguins:
The Avalanche now improved their record to 8-1 despite being out-shot last night by a margin of 34 to 14! They had only 9 shots with roughly 12 minutes of play left in the 3rd period and makes you wonder, how long can they keep this up? New coach Patrick Roy is good but to me this isn't by peer skill. So far this season, the Avalanche have now been out-shot by their opponents 304 to 262. With a mediocre Defense, a lot of pressure is put on to goaltending which makes me question just how far this run will go before they come crashing back to reality?
Landeskog with the loan first period tally to clinch the game for them, as Giguere somehow stonewalling the top team in the East with a 34 save shutout. Sidney Crosby was held pointless, with 7 shots. While Chris Kunitz 4 game point streak finally ended.
San Jose Sharks vs. Detroit Red Wings:
Another game came to a goaltenders duel, as Anti Niemi & Jimmy Howard were perfect through regulation and overtime to take this game to a shootout. It was a very even game, Detroit being my team I have to show some praise because they were finally able to slow the Sharks offense down and held Patrick Marleau off the score sheet for the first time all season, and snapping Wisconsin native Joe Pavelski's 4 game point streak. Despite missing Detroits top defensive unit (Kronwall w/ a mild concussion, & Jonathan Ericsson was with his wife who was in labor) Jimmy Howard looked like he was in prime form. Speaking of, it's almost time for the Olympics which all this does is convince me even more that Jimmy Howard is making his case for starting goalie for the US this year, and I'm calling it right now. HE DOES. Only person to come close is Johnathan Quick because of his ridiculous Stanley Cup run 2 years ago, but is lacking this year posting average numbers (2.56 GAA, & .909 SV%). Logan Couture with the lone shootout goal and Anti Niemi coming up huge with this save, it's just absolutely ridiculous. Take a look below. mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org
Los Angeles Kings vs. Calgary Flames:
How about the Abbortsford Heat! I'm sorry I meant the Flames, you get the idea. Despite being the joke at the dinner table, Calgary has somehow strung together a little bit of a record, going 4-2-2 this year so far ( i know, it's so early yet, give it time) but you can't help but wonder how they're doing it? Is it because they know that despite being gutted and losing their captain, and the face of their franchise goalie to retirement that they have nothing to lose at this point? They beat the Kings last night 3-2 while Karri Rammo made his 2nd consecutive start. The net in Calgary is still up for grabs, and I think it will be all year. Joey Macdonald isn't going to go away that easily and once this teams record starts to reflect it's age and depth, they'll start using the merry go round of goalies. The flames PP was in full effect last night scoring each of their goal on the man advantage with Jiri Hudler tallying 2 PP apples, and TJ Brodie with the game winning goal. Monahan with another goal, this kid is actually on fire and you can't help but think the Flames have no choice in keeping him with the team all year. He's panning out a whole lot better than Baertschi did last year, and he's making his case to stay. Jeff Carter once again with a goal, and Drew Doughty finally starting to show why he could be a top fantasy asset with a PP goal, and as much as I hate to admit it, Justin William with another assist giving him 4 points in his last 2 games. It's just a little streak, but his 6 points in 10 games could bolster your roster with a little depth in some pools if you really need it.
